The award ceremony we witnessed in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, has gone down in history as a triumph of realpolitik and resolute diplomatic will. February 4 of this year has been inscribed in golden letters in the annals of global diplomacy. It was precisely on this date that the “Zayed Award for Human Fraternity” was presented to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and the fact that the highest award was personally conferred by the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, further enhanced the political significance of the event.
The sincere meeting, handshake, and mutual respect demonstrated during the presentation between the two heads of state became a vivid manifestation of the new strategic realities taking shape in the region. President Ilham Aliyev’s receipt of this prestigious award is not accidental; it is the logical outcome of a consistent, pragmatic, and resolute policy pursued over many years.
Against the backdrop of ongoing bloody conflicts in various parts of the world, the initialing of the “Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations” between Azerbaijan and Armenia stands as a rare and striking example demonstrating the possibility of dialogue between civilizations. Although the concept of peace in the modern international relations system often carries a relative character, the result achieved in the South Caucasus has an absolute significance.
For decades, Western diplomats, the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, and various international mediators effectively kept the resolution of the conflict in a frozen state. However, official Baku proved that a just and sustainable peace is possible only through the restoration of the norms and principles of international law, the assurance of territorial integrity, and the inviolability of state sovereignty.
The “Zayed Award for Human Fraternity” presented to the President of Azerbaijan at the solemn ceremony held in Abu Dhabi in February 2026 is precisely the victory of this political and legal paradigm. The decision of the jury demonstrates that the international community now values real results rather than mere declarations. Thanks to President Ilham Aliyev’s diplomatic skill, the region has been freed from external interference and has transitioned to a framework of direct dialogue.
There is an organic link between the philosophy of the award and Azerbaijan’s peace agenda. Based on the legacy of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, this award promotes the values of humanism, tolerance, and solidarity. The elimination of decades-long hostility in the Caucasus, the neutralization of revanchist tendencies, and the bequeathing of a stable and secure region to future generations fully align with these values.
Despite being the victorious side, the President of Azerbaijan extended a hand of peace to the defeated party, proposing the opening of communications, economic reintegration, and regional cooperation. This approach ensured a transition from the classical “winner–loser” model to the “win-win” principle. The jury’s choice is a high appreciation of precisely this humanistic and far-sighted policy.
The “Zayed Award for Human Fraternity” is based on the principles of the “Document on Human Fraternity” signed in 2019 by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmed Al-Tayyeb. Azerbaijan’s multinational and multi-confessional society, its traditions of tolerance, and its policy of multiculturalism are fully consistent with the spirit of this document. Under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijan has not only achieved a military-political victory but has also strengthened its position as one of the global centers of religious and ethnic tolerance.
The objective decision of the independent international jury is an expression of appreciation for the new security architecture created by Azerbaijan in the South Caucasus. The initialing of the peace agreement is the logical conclusion of a long and complex negotiation process. There are no longer any “grey zones,” illegal armed groups, or centers of separatism in the region.
