Ilham Aliyev’s Visit to Serbia: A New Stage in Azerbaijan–Serbia Strategic Partnership

The official visit of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, to the Republic of Serbia once again demonstrated the strategic nature of relations between the two countries and marked the beginning of a new stage of cooperation. The negotiations held and the statements delivered during the visit indicate that Azerbaijan–Serbia relations are built on political trust, mutual respect, and shared interests.

President Ilham Aliyev emphasized his long-standing sincere relations with President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić, noting that the personal trust established between the leaders plays an important role in the development of interstate relations. Azerbaijan and Serbia consistently support each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within international organizations, which further strengthens the political foundation of their partnership.

During the visit, the first meeting of the Azerbaijan–Serbia Strategic Council was held, and the main directions of future cooperation were identified. The parties agreed to expand political dialogue, deepen economic relations, and implement joint projects in the fields of transport and energy. This represents an important step toward strengthening the institutional foundations of cooperation.

The energy sector stands out as a priority area of bilateral relations. Azerbaijan has already begun exporting natural gas to Serbia, and an increase in export volumes is planned. At the same time, the decision to build a joint power plant reflects the commitment of both countries to energy security and long-term economic partnership. It was noted that Azerbaijan currently has a 2-gigawatt energy export potential and plans to create an additional 8 gigawatts of capacity by 2032. This opens up new opportunities for cooperation with Serbia.

Azerbaijan’s readiness to invest substantial capital in Serbia demonstrates the promising prospects of economic relations. Ongoing reforms in Serbia and the favorable investment climate create an attractive environment for Azerbaijani investors. Mutual investment projects will contribute to the economic development of both countries and enhance the sustainability of their partnership.

Thus, President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to Serbia confirmed that Azerbaijan–Serbia relations are developing at the level of a strategic partnership and demonstrated strong political will to implement concrete projects, particularly in the fields of energy and investment. The visit inspires confidence that friendship and cooperation between the two countries will continue to expand in the future.
