Azerbaijan’s foreign policy is based on the principles of regional integration, the protection of international law, and multilateral cooperation. This policy serves both the country’s economic development and the strengthening of its international reputation.
In particular, Azerbaijan’s relations with European states have been one of the main priorities of its foreign policy since gaining independence. These relations have expanded in the fields of energy, trade, culture, security, and education, rising to the level of strategic partnership. In this context, relations between Azerbaijan and Italy carry not only bilateral but also international strategic importance.
Italy is one of Azerbaijan’s largest trading partners and plays an important role in Europe’s energy security through the Southern Gas Corridor. Overall, Azerbaijan–Italy relations serve as a successful example of strategic partnership in modern international politics.
On May 4, in Baku, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and the Chair of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic, Giorgia Meloni, who was visiting the country, made press statements and once again emphasized the strategic nature of relations between the two states.
President Ilham Aliyev noted that Italy is Azerbaijan’s main trading partner and emphasized that the reliable cooperation established in the energy sector is of great importance for the European market. He highlighted the importance of expanding the Trans Adriatic Pipeline project, opportunities for military-technical cooperation, projects implemented by Italian companies in Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur, as well as the role of the newly established Azerbaijan–Italy University as a cultural bridge between the two peoples.
In her speech, the Chair of the Council of Ministers of Italy expressed her position on bilateral relations as follows: “Today, relations between our countries are of special political importance to me. Thirteen years have passed since the official visit of the Prime Minister of Italy to Azerbaijan, and I believe that this long pause had to be overcome. This visit strengthens not only our friendly relations but also the important cooperation existing between Italy and Azerbaijan. Our relations have entered a qualitatively new stage.”
Thus, during the meeting, Azerbaijan–Italy relations were once again confirmed at the level of strategic partnership in the fields of energy, defense, economy, education, and culture, and new directions were identified for further deepening future cooperation.
